Macaron Cafe 09-15-2010

Location: 161 W. 36th St.
Time: 1:30pm
People: SaSha & Sis and myself

Feelings: After almost three months of maternity leave, I am back to work. I have heard stories from other moms about how tough it is to re-enter the workforce and leave their babies behind with caregivers. It surely is difficult, but at the same time, I absolutely love being back in the adult world. Some of the people act even more childish than my baby boy, CK., but having my own time back is quite delightful, especially the lunch hour. I realized I have taken my lunch hour (and the follow-up blog report) for granted until now.

We headed over to Macaron Cafe for a quick lunch. Macaron Cafe is always packed during lunch, but it was particularly crowded due to their '"free dessert day" event coordinated with the new Bravo show, Just Desserts. While we waited in line, we snacked on their free mini macarons, which were unfortunately a little hard and a bit stale. I guess that's what we get for a free dessert!

My Farm Salad ($8.25, carrot, red beets, avocado, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, celery, mustard sauce) was fresh but over-drenched in creamy dressing. This salad was a wolf in sheep's clothing. You feel like eating healthily but you are actually consuming more calories than fries.

SaSha's "Siciliano" sandwich ($7.75) was average with a few too many capers and not enough bressaola. "The baguette was good, and I thought the portion size was right," she added.

Since they are a bakery after all, it would be wise to choose bread-related products here. I'd also encourage you to pay for their delicious macarons and forget about the stale free ones. There is indeed nothing more disappointing than an old macaron.

What I most love about this place is how their staff here call my name when my order is ready. Even my utterly Japanese name sounds so chic and French when they say it with a sensuous French accent, and I feel like a femme fatale for a second.
