Spot Dessert Bar 12-09-2009

Location: 13 St. Marks Pl.
Time: 8pm
People: RB and myself

Feelings: Spot, the new Asian inspired dessert bar, opened a few weeks ago on St Marks below Pho 32. We opened their door and were captured by their sweet sugary aroma. Their simple and chic decor was quite impressive, and I felt completely comfortable, which is a must for a cafe or dessert bar. I especially enjoyed the dimmed light with candles at every table. It set the perfect mood for a nice dessert time.

The price was rather reasonable since I was expecting somewhat of Chikalicious price range. RB's Thai black coffee was $2.50, and my organic mint tea was $2.75. We shared one of their "seasonal dessert tapas" dishes called "Yuzu Eskimo," which was $7 and took home some of their cookies that cost $1.75 per cookie. With their impressive decor and cute menu design, I expected to be at least $10 for the dessert tapas.

Their dessert, Yuzu Eskimo, was no Chikalicious, but it was still interesting. The yuzu cheesecake tasted like the mixture of butter and ice cream, and the interesting texture I felt on my tongue was something I have rarely experienced anywhere else at the price of $7. The tanginess from the raspberry foam complimented the creaminess of the cheesecake and also worked as a palate cleanser. I felt that the crumbs of oreo were unnecessary, but it was quite yummy as a side to the cheesecake with strawberries.

Spot is a nice dessert spot for when you don't want to go to one of many froyo places on St. Marks, and you don't want to spend too much money or time at Chikalicious Dessert Bar. Chikalicious Dessert Club, the cheaper and quicker version of Chikalicious Dessert Bar, is my choice of quick dessert bites in the area, but Spot brings nice service and atmosphere. The staff is friendly, the bathroom is clean, and it is indeed hot date appropriate. You can't expect the layers of delicate flavors and sophistication of Chika, but Spot has earned its spot in the area.
