Soba from Bocca 12-01-2009
Location: 135 West 50th St.
Time: 1pm
Feelings: I usually get my take out soba from Cafe Duke for lunch, but when my coworker Stefanie mentioned that Bocca has the better soba and udon station, I was ready for the new soba lunch adventure. I was a little skeptical at first. How can this Italian-centric deli beat the Korean deli with soba and udon?
Bocca is clean and spacious, the service is friendly and quick, and it is less crowded than Duke. Both Bocca and Duke charge 50 cents more for soba, which I never understand why. Despite this added expense, I ordered the veggie soba ($7.50).
It was a pleasant surprise. The broth was very flavorful, and they did not water it down like Duke or many other soba spots. I finished all the broth, which I never do even at an actual soba restaurant. The vegetables were fresh, and the noodles were cooked well and had a nice chewy texture. I didn't know it was possible to get al dente noodles from a deli! You may not get the Sobakoh quality, but for deli soba, you can't get much better. Top shelf deli soba, indeed.
Needless to say, Bocca will be my soba take out of choice for lunch. Thank you Stefanie!
