Original California Taqueria 08-22-2009

Feelings: We are two unsatisfied Brooklynites in Cobble Hill. We cannot find decent Asian takeout places in the area. I have been living without semi-authentic Thai or good-bad Chinese food for almost a month now, and I have to say, I started to miss Queens a little bit. Are there no hole-in-the-wall Thai joints? Where are the acceptable bad Chinese take outs? Are there only posh patisseries, cafes and bistros in this neighborhood?

Then, we saw a taqueria on Court Street with a promisingly dungeon-y looking decor. This could be our Mexican takeout joint, I thought. I ordered a vegetarian platter ($6.25), and RB, who would eat Mexican food everyday, ordered "Outrageous California" burrito ($6.95) with chicken and pork. It was cheaper than Burritoville or Uncle Moe's, and the portions were huge.

My vegetarian platter came with beans, rice, pico de gallo, guacamole, lettuce and chips. They were nothing spectacular or remotely California, but the pico de gallo was fresh and perhaps the best part of the meal. The guacamole was runny and looked like Oscar the Grouch melted, but the other components were fresh and satisfied my bad takeout food cravings.

RB's burrito was a pretty standard overstuffed burrito with two meats, pork and chicken, which complimented each other. The flavor of burrito resembled Uncle Moe's, which is known for their Mission style burritos, but this taqueria said they make LA style burritos. I suppose that's why they didn't call themselves "Original LA Taqueria"?

We are pretty content with this place for what it is. Everyone needs a bad Chinese takeout and a taqueria with huge burritos as their neighborhood staples. Now, where are decent Thai places?
